
Getting Your Paint to Cure Faster with Carbon Fiber IR
If you’re tired of waiting around for clear coats to dry, carbon fiber infrared (IR) tubes are the way to go. Think of them as a shortcut. Instead of just heating the air or the very top layer of paint—which is what those old halogen lamps do—these tubes send shortwave radiation straight through the paint and into the metal. It heats the car from the inside out. It’s fast. Really fast. Because carbon fiber doesn’t hold onto heat the way metal does, these things hit their peak temperature almost the second you flip the switch. You aren’t wasting time waiting for the equipment to warm up; you’re getting that paint to cross-link and harden right away. Now, the hardware itself is pretty clever. We use a quartz glass shell because it lets the heat pass through without blocking it. And we chose carbon fiber for the heating element because it doesn’t get brittle and snap after being turned on and off a thousand times. We seal the ends with heavy-duty adhesives so oxygen can’t get in and fry the filament. But here is a heads-up:be careful when you touch them. Seriously. Even a single fingerprint on the glass can create a “hot spot.” That little smudge of oil can cause the tube to overheat in one spot and pop. Wear some lint-free gloves when you’re putting them in. It’s a small step that saves you from buying a replacement tube next week. When you’re actually setting up your curing rack, spacing is everything. If you mount the tubes too close, you’ll scorch the clear coat. If they’re too far away, you lose that “magic” punch of the shortwave radiation and you’re back to waiting. One last thing—keep an eye on your power. Voltage spikes are the enemy here; they’ll chew through a carbon filament in no time. Just make sure your wiring is beefy enough to handle the constant current so your junctions don’t start overheating. Get that right, and you’ll be moving cars out of the booth a lot faster.
