
Let’s Talk About Carbon Fiber Heating Elements
Most people are used to nichrome wire, but we do things a bit differently. We use a conductive carbon composite core wrapped in high-purity quartz or ceramic. Why? Because it gets hot—really hot—much faster than the old metal stuff.
Getting the Power Right
When we’re figuring out the specs for your tubes, it all comes down to watt density. If you need a fast cycle, we push more wattage into a shorter length. It’s like turning up the intensity to get the job done quicker. If you’re running a high-voltage setup, you’ll notice the current draw drops. That’s a win for you because it means you can use thinner wiring in your control panel. Just a heads-up: make sure your power supply actually matches the element’s rated voltage. If you push too much voltage through, you’ll fry that carbon filament in no time.
Why the Design Actually Matters
One of the best things about carbon fiber is that it doesn’t really care about extreme heat. Unlike metal, it doesn’t sag or warp when things get intense. We wrap the core in quartz to keep oxygen from eating away at the filament. For some jobs, we even add a special coating. This pushes the heat into the short-wave infrared spectrum, which means the heat actually sinks deep into your plastics or metals instead of just sitting on the surface. And don’t worry about the connections. Whether you want a press-fit end cap or a specific lead-wire setup, we make sure it’s tight. There’s nothing worse than a connection that wiggles loose just because the machine heated up and cooled down a few times.
Making it Work in Your Shop
In most cases, you can just swap your old IR lamps for these. You’ll notice the ramp-up time is way faster, and you aren’t wasting energy heating up air. You get the heat right where you need it. But here is the thing: because these elements are so powerful, they’re hard on your reflectors. If your reflectors are dirty or pitted, you’re basically throwing energy away. Also, double-check your cooling fans. You want to make sure the ends of the tubes stay cool, or you’re asking for trouble.
