
Getting Carbon Fiber Heating Tubes Right for Heavy-Duty Heat
If you need heat—and you need it now—carbon fiber infrared tubes are the way to go. Basically, we take a carbon filament, tuck it inside a quartz sleeve, and let it blast out short-wave infrared radiation. It’s fast. Really fast. Unlike those old-school metal alloy elements, these things don’t struggle with resistance. They just push out heat more efficiently, which means your ramp-up time drops significantly. The tricky part: Power and Voltage Here’s the thing about heat density. If you cram high wattage into a short tube, you’re creating a serious thermal hotspot. It’s powerful, but you have to be careful. You’ve got to match your power supply to the tube’s rated voltage exactly. If you don’t, you’ll fry the filament. And a word of advice? Don’t over-spec the wattage for your housing. If you do, you might find yourself accidentally cooking your machine frame. Make sure your cooling system can actually handle the heat bleed, or you’re asking for trouble. What’s actually inside? We use high-purity quartz for the outer shell. Why? Because it lets the infrared light slide right through without soaking up the heat itself. The energy goes straight into your workpiece, where it belongs. As for the connections, we stick to the basics like R7s or Sk15 bases. They just work. They slide right into most industrial setups, fit snugly, and stop those annoying electrical arcs from popping at the contact points. Using them for plastics and PET If you’re doing PET blowing or shrink-wrapping, these tubes are a lifesaver. Because they use short-wave emission, the heat sinks into the plastic way faster than just blowing hot air around. Your cycle times shrink, and the melt across the preform looks much more consistent. But a heads-up: carbon filaments are a bit fragile when it comes to shaking. If your machine vibrates like crazy, your tubes won’t last long. I always suggest using vibration-dampening mounts. It keeps everything steady and stops the quartz from cracking while you’re running at full speed.
