
Let’s Talk Carbon Fiber Quartz Lamps
If you’re used to standard tungsten coils, these carbon fiber lamps are a different beast. We’ve swapped the metal for a carbon-fiber core and tucked it inside a high-purity quartz tube. Why? Because it hits harder and faster. It’s all about that targeted infrared radiation that actually sinks into your materials instead of just dancing on the surface.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing about voltage: it’s everything. The relationship between your voltage and the length of the tube dictates exactly how much heat you’re getting. If you’re running a high-wattage setup, a higher voltage keeps the center of the filament from dipping in temperature, even on the longer tubes. But you have to be precise.Really precise. If you under-voltage the lamp, your heating becomes patchy. If you over-voltage it? You’ll pop the filament instantly. It’s a “get it right the first time” kind of situation.
The Build: Quartz and Carbon
We stick with quartz glass because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. Pair that with carbon fiber—which doesn’t expand nearly as much as metal does when it gets hot—and you’ve got a lamp that stays stable even if you’re cycling it on and off constantly. Depending on what you’re actually heating, we can add coatings to shift the IR spectrum. Sometimes you need shortwave, sometimes medium-wave. We can tweak that. One quick tip: keep an eye on your connectors (usually R7s or Sk15). Make sure they’re snug. A loose connection creates a hot spot, and before you know it, you’re looking at a warped socket or a melted housing. Not a great look.
Real-World Use (and the Catch)
You’ll see these all over the place in PET blowing and plastic curing. They pack a massive amount of heat into a tiny footprint and react almost instantly. When your timing needs to be spot-on, that speed is a lifesaver. But, there’s a trade-off. Quartz is fragile. It’s glass, after all. If your machinery is rattling too much, or if a tech touches the tube with oily fingers, that glass is going to crack the moment it heats up. Keep them clean. Keep them steady. Do that, and they’ll do the heavy lifting for you.
