
Let’s Talk Carbon Infrared Lamps
If you’re used to standard quartz heaters, carbon infrared lamps are a different beast. Instead of the usual setup, we use a carbon fiber filament tucked inside a quartz envelope. Here is why that matters: it shifts the heat spectrum. You get a lot more medium-to-long wave radiation, which is a fancy way of saying the heat actually sinks into plastics and organic materials. It gets the job done without scorching the surface.
Getting the Power Right
When you’re picking your lamp, keep a close eye on the relationship between voltage and wattage. That’s where your heat density comes from. But be careful. High-wattage tubes are picky. If your voltage isn’t steady, you’ll burn out the filament way faster than you should. Voltage spikes are basically death sentences for these lamps. And a quick tip from the field: watch your current draw when you first flip the switch. We’ve seen plenty of engineers forget about that initial warm-up surge, only to have the breakers trip immediately. Make sure your system is sized for the peak, not just the average.
The Build and the Connections
The quartz tube isn’t just for show—it keeps the carbon filament from oxidizing. We use specific grades of glass so the tubes don’t just crack when they heat up and cool down rapidly. As for the plugs, we usually go with R7s or SK15 connectors. They should slide right into most industrial racks. Just make sure the fit is tight. A loose connection creates resistance, and that’s a great way to melt your socket.
Where They Shine (and Where They Don’t)
These are a go-to for PET blowing and drying lines. Why? Because they hit the target temperature way faster than a convection oven. You save space, and your cycle times drop. It’s a win-win. But there is a catch. The carbon filament is fragile. It puts out massive heat, but it can’t handle a beating. If your machinery shakes or vibrates, youhaveto use dampened mounts. If you don’t, the filament will simply snap. One last thing: keep your reflectors clean. If your mirrors get coated in dust or oil, you’re throwing away a huge chunk of your heat. A quick wipe-down makes a world of difference.
